Anyone had a Weimaraner and Labrador or compare the 2?
I have a Young Labrador and am thinking about adopting an 2 year old trained Weimaraner. Does anyone have any experience with both of these breeds? Experience with both of these breeds together? Do Weimaraners make good leaders to yonger pups? Do Weimaraners listen well? I would like to spend hours every evening and on the weekend with playing with the dogs in the yard. Anyone have a Weimaraner that was aggressive towards other dogs or nice towards other dogs? Anyone have a just some advise? I am looking everywhere before I decide to jump into it.
What a coincidence – I have a weimaraner and a black lab! But my lab is a year older than the weimaraner. My weimie is a great dog, but kind of high maintenance. Extremely smart, if you’re willing to put some effort into training them. Mine fought with my lab a little bit when I first got her, but it only took a few days for them to get used to each other and now they’re inseperable. She’s never been aggressive toward anyone (and we have dogs and kids on BOTH sides of our house, and two small kids of our own) but they tend to be very high-strung. You’ll have to teach them not to jump up on people when they get excited. We put her in obedience training at Petsmart, and it worked very well. They tend to get separation anxiety, so make sure you have a crate for her while you’re at work to keep her from freaking out and destroying your house. Mine is okay now, but was really bad about chewing at first. If the one you’re thinking of getting is 2, he may be out of that stage, but I’d get him a crate anyway just in case. I highly suggest you have a fenced in yard, because he’s going to like to run. If you don’t, try one of the invisible fences. That’s what we have and it took quite a bit of training, but now it works beautifully.
Labs and weimies are great dogs as long as you have the time and patience for both of them. Feel free to drop me an email if you have any specific questions! theresacrider@yahoo.com
Oh, just a couple more things I just thought of. My weim likes to try and hog attention from the lab, so you’ll have to make a point to occasionally tell the weim to go away and pay attention just to the lab. Also, weims are natural hunters. It’s happened twice that mine caught birds in the back yard (don’t ask me how) and paraded it around like she was proud of herself. She doesn’t bother my cat at all, but you may have to occasionally check the yard for birds and squirrels and such.
