I am researching about large breed dogs, will you guys help me figure out which one sounds best for me?
I currently have two toy poodles, they are both very friendly and enjoy other animals (although my younger one is very mischevious, lol)! Well, I’ve alway had a big dog and I really miss that, they make me feel secure. Well, although I don’t want a dog that’s going to be so protective that I can’t feel comfortable with have friends and family over I would like to feel like I would be protected if anything bad were to happen. Books say that Golden Retrievers are not protective at all. But, I LOVE them. I’ve researched quite a bit about them. I love that they’re smart and easy to train, on top of that they’re active and very friendly. But, are they too friendly? My second choice of breed is one that is completely opposite! My aunt had a boxer that I group up around when I was little. That dog took such good care of me and my cousins. My set back with boxers is that I’m not sure how well it would be around my poodles. What do you guys think?
I think you should truely consider a good labmix from the shelter. Shelter dogs are instinctively gracious and labs, while they do get on well with other dogs and kids, they are slightly protective of their families. They are also smart, and if they like to fetch, they are easy to exercise.
Labs do need lots of exercise to keep from being bored, so you may enjoy getting into dockdogs or flyball. No matter what, at least puppy kindergarten and work on getting the CGC (Canine Good Citizenship) which you can do throug most obedience training facilties. Keep the pup active and you will have a best friend for life… and yes, he or she will look out for you.
