The Power Of Positive Dog Training

Question for people who has a pet on Prozac…does it cause stinky poop?

My dog recently started Prozac for isolated incidences of fear aggression. First let me say that I have done 5 rounds of positive reinforcement training and tried everything in my power NOT to medicate him. He is from a rescue shelter and the consensus of my vet and trainers is that he had a very traumatic “puppy hood”. His aggression appears when he is startled. His reaction is like a cobra striking, a behaviorist I took him to calls it “I am going to break up with you before you break up with me”.

Anyhow…the Prozac is working wonders! He is now his playful, silly self all the time and is even enjoying doggie daycare. He is so much more relaxed that he is having fun and able to be a dog (vs. a cobra ready to strike if some one/thing scares him).

I am noticing one thing and wondering if it’s a side effect of the drug, his poop STINKS! There has been no change to his food, treats or environment. Has any one else experienced this that has a pet on Prozac?

I have a dog on Clonicalm, which is another anti-anxiety med like Prozac.

His problem is not fear aggression, but separation anxiety. He gets diarhea when he’s alone, even for a few minutes sometimes. He stinks, but he always did. As I’m always holding my nose cleaning up, it’s really hard to judge… maybe, now you mention it, it does stink a little more.

For your dog, perhaps he’s now digesting his food differently? A nervous dog has a nervous stomach, and now he’s less nervous so is his stomach.
