I have a 13 week old german shepherd puppy & am having problems training him. After walks he p”s in crate !?
He is loved and very smart, I am just at my witts end, as my husband is threghtening to rid of him, so I need any advice in training my puppy please ! I am useing a crate.
Clean the crate out with an enzyme cleaner such as Nature’s Miracle. For the next couple of weeks plan on a strict routine. Take him out hourly (except at night, every 4 hrs) AND in addition, any time he touches nose to floor, immediately jump up in ‘surprise’ and say ‘let’s go potty’ or something to that effect. Repeat ‘potty’ consistently til he does it, no playing, no affection until it’s done. Immediately following the ‘deed’, give a treat or toy reward accompanied by reinforcing praise “good potty”. Soon this command will be associated with the idea that that quicker he relieves himself, the quicker he’ll get a great reward. The anticipation of that reward will work to motivate him to do it right away instead of being distracted and ‘holding’ it while he sniffs and plays.
Don’t put him back in his crate until he’s relieved himself. Once in, watch him carefully and verbally ‘surprise ‘ him if you suspect even the slightest inclination to pee. Once he settles, praise and offer a small chewy reward that will keep his attention and help him settle back in.
Restrict his water intake so he doesn’t gulp down more than he needs, which pups are keen to do.
After a couple of weeks of strict routine and vigilance, the accidents will be a thing of the past.
