Puppy Obedience

How to teach my puppy great obedience?

I really want to train my puppy beagle good so he will be perfectly obedient. Please tell me some good ways to train him to make him listen. He knows how to sit, lay down, come, and some stuff like that, but if im not doing a training session with him, he most of the time wont listen, Please give me sugestions to make him more obedient and to listen more

Puppies often do that…they know when they are supposed to be working and when they are “off duty”. You may have made your training sessions so specific that in his mind he knows he doesn’t have to listen if he is not in class.
There is a saying in puppy training…say it, do it. If he doesn’t listen, you must make him listen. Certainly not by using force, but don’t just give up and say he’s not listening…stay with the command until he does it.
I would suggest leaving his leash on so it is easier for you to get control…he can’t run away from you. If he does not sit the first time you tell him to, take the leash, stand in front of him and pull up gently while you sort of back him up. He will sit. No praise or treats for that…only when he listens the first time. Same thing for come…go to him if necessary, take the leash and gently pull, tug , heel him to where you wanted him to be. Make him wait a minute and then release. No praise, no treats.
My biggest mistake as a new “trainer” was that I did not lengthen the time of performance. If I asked my 7 month old pup to sit and he did, I praised and treated him. Great, but I SHOULD have started withholding the treat for longer periods of time. Starting out with a sit/wait for 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes and so on. Now that my boy is 3, and I know better, we still do basic obedience, but I ask him to sit, stay wait for 5 minutes…and he knows he better recall instantly!!
Basically, you just need to be consistent and demanding whether you are having a formal training session or not. And watch your timing. Reward the instant he does something right, make sure you do not reward for sloppy or slow performance.
Good luck and have fun w your pup!
