how do you train your dog to wal off leash and not run away?
My dog if he gets a chance to go outside he takes it and he darts he runs rite up to the highway luckily nothing has happened yet. and i am soooo scared that something will happen. When i first got him he walked off leash but then he just stopped and i need help. I take him on 2-3 walks a day please help
i dont really want him to be off leash i just want him to not dart out
you need to train recall. Do this in an enclosed area, or with a long training leash. I trained recall by having my dog sit, giving the stay command, and seeing how far away I could walk from her before she would come. For the longest time it was when she couldn’t see me anymore, or when I wasn’t watching her. But with time, and lots of praise for wanted behavior, she won’t budge until I give her the “come” command.
Also, I will throw a toy for her, she will run after it, and I will say sit. For a VERY long time, she would ignore me. But, once again, with tons of praise and rewards for good behavior, she will sit mid-run if I tell her to.
Once you’ve worked on your dogs recall and perfected it as well as you can, there isn’t a thing in the world that will distract your dog enough to keep him from listening to you.
