I don’t think it’s a good idea you go about this on your own. There are way too many other aspects of “protection” training to consider, nerves, (if the dog doesn’t have great nerves, he or she will turn into a fear-biter) confidence, prey drive, fight drive, and overall being a civil, friendly outgoing dog.
A German Shepherd should have the natural instinct to protect it’s family, sometimes this wont show untl two years old. If you really want your dog trained to protect, find a local trainer that specializes in family protection dogs, but it isn’t cheap, you are looking at a min of $3,000.
