I have some questions about hunting dogs?
My dad asked me to help find him some information about hunting dogs. We need to know two things.
1. What are some of the best bird dogs?
2. When would be the best time of the year to get a puppy to train?
Thank you!
My dad wants to hunt quail and ducks/geese.
Go to the AKC web site to research field spaniels. there are a lot of hunting dogs, but some are better at scenting and some are better at sighting. Once you decide which breed you would like, look for a reputable breeder in your area. Once again, the AKC web site can help you with that or you can contact a breed club in your area or the national breed club for the breed you decide on. Once you find the breeder you want to buy from, they will let you know when they will have pups available. Good breeders do not breed unless they can place the pups. There will most likely be a waiting list for pups from a good pedigreed dog. Another option would be to check your local humane society, animal shelter, or breed rescue to find a dog. You won’t have to worry about raising from a pup, you can still train it to hunt, and it will be less expensive than a pedigreed dog from a breeder. It all depends on your personal preference. A lot of dogs from breed rescues can become champions with proper training and care.
A list of some of the breeds that are good at hunting birds:
airedales
brittany spaniels
english pointers
english setters
english springer spaniels
flat coated retriever
french brittany spaniel
german shorthaired pointer
german wire haired pointer
golden retriever
gordon setter
italian spinone
labrador retriever
vizlas
weimaraners
I wish you luck on finding the breed that will fit in with you and your family.
