Dog House Training. How to train them to ask to go outside?
We have a 7 month old puppy. She will always go to toilet outside if the back door is open but if the door is closed she will not ask to go out and then go inside, can anyone offer some advice please. We always praise and treat her when she goes outside and have not shouted or punished when she does go inside. Are we doing anything wrong? All help greatly appreciated. Thanks
She will be giving a sign that she wants to out but it may be so subtle that you don’t get the message. It may only be a quick anxious glance at you or the door. Just keep a very close eye on her, especially when she hasn’t been out for a while. When you notice something, ask her “Do you want to out?”, then let her out.
As someone else said, she’ll associate the words with going out for a wee – but she’ll probably just go out anyway when you say those words, but some dogs actually learn to “answer” you, either by going through the door or walking away from it if she soesn’t want to!
