German Shepherd Obedience Training

are all German Shepherd puppies so playful?

I got a german shepherd puppy from europe from my father because he finds them highly intelligent and elegant dogs when they are adults, plus he had them as he was growing up so it’s not like we chose the breed without experience.

we went and bought the puppy who seemed very calm, but lively, as well as observant and smart. we flew back with him and he was just precious.

now he is 12 weeks and i think the trouble monster is just beginning. he just doesn’t listen unless you have a treat, even that sometimes doesnt motivate him, and it’s not like ill have a treat at hand at all times

are german shepherds really extremely playful puppies and nip a lot?

my puppy likes to nip, but it hurts a lot because his teeth are razor sharp, and he knows very well what “no” means, but he just barks and snaps back when he doesnt want to listen. hes only 12 weeks, will this behavior grow out?

any advice?
is obedience training neccessary at this point?

Yes he sounds like a normal healthy puppy. He will outgrow this behavior as long as you train him right. I would start the pup in obediance class as soon as he has had all of his shots. Obiediance class will help you learn as well as your pup. Plus your pup will get some socialization with other pups and people(besides your household). GSD’s love to herd, they usually do this by nipping at the feet and ankles (of people and animals). The GSD that my family had when I was a kid used to herd my sisters and I back to the house when we were playing outside, she must have thought that that is were we belonged, she would nip( really just a pinch) until we went back to the house. With proper training and some redirecting of her herding instinct(she was trained to herd cattle), she became a great dog. Good luck with your puppy.
