Tips to ensure a smooth transition in moving into a new home?
I have heard dogs will adjust to new homes as long as their owner “alpha dog” is there. But my concern is her possibly having to be house broken again. What are the chances of us having to resort back to step one with potty training. Also, any other tips to make the move a smooth & stress free as possible for the both of us?
I was told by a trainer, not to wash any of her beds, blankets, etc. So she is able to take her scent/ home with her. Any tips appreciated
I’ve moved lots with dogs, as well as camped, and travelled staying in motels, and haven’t had one who cared where we were as long as I was there. I think it helps to take the familiar blanket or whatever, so you can put it down and the dog knows where it’s supposed to sleep in this new place. Don’t worry about washing or not washing. There is no washing you can do which will remove enough scent so the dog won’t recognize its blanket.
I also see no reason, as long as the dog really is house broken, that she won’t adjust very quickly to a new place. I’d take her for a tour of the new yard almost as soon as you get there, give lots of praise if she pees during the tour, and that’s probably about all you’ll have to do. Give her time to have a good sniff around the place. Go out with her the first few times in case she’s nervous in a new yard. Put the food and water dish out right away too. Mine settle right into a hotel room with dishes and blanket set out.
During the upheaval of the move, keep as much as possible to your usual schedules and routines with the dog. Many dogs recognize when you’re moving or going away. If your dog is one who knows what packing a suitcase or loading a bunch of stuff into the car means, it’s often best to put the dog in the car while the movers do their thing, assuming the dog likes car rides. That way, the dog doesn’t wonder what the heck is happening to its familiar house, doesn’t get underfoot, and doesn’t worry that it will be left behind. It’s in the car because it’s going too.
