Does Don Sullivan’s Training the perfect dog kit really work?

and i would really appreciate it if you didn’t or haven’t used the system not to answer because i want real facts. And if it didn’t for you, please tell me a good system that does.

I have viewed the tapes and they are okay except that they leave out a lot of steps. He shows a lot of fairly well trained dogs on his tapes and very few untrained dogs, especially in the stationary exercises like stays. His problems tapes doesn’t go over much at all. The toenail trimming tape went from a biting, screaming dog to a dog that laid perfectly to have the nails trimmed in about five seconds. You were not shown the steps that it takes to get from point A to point B. This could be very frustrating for a new trainer. The method itself is a valid method and is based off of old school training using the old jerk, pull, and praise method. In fact much of it seemed to be an off take of koehler training which is a good method if used properly. Personally, I feel that the collar is fine. It’s basically a “Good Dog” collar that Don Sullivan put is own name on. I don’t care for the polypropylene leashes that he recommends as I feel that they are extremely hard on the hands and have a tendency to break when pulling on a large dog. However this method can be used effectively with a chain training collar, pinch collar, a leather leash, and a good cotton long line.

If this set is at your local library or if you can find a used copy, you might want to review it instead of putting a lot of money out to buy it. I would recommend that with any dog training method. There is not one method that works well for all dogs or their owners so take the time to review many before you try them on your dog. You will find that some parts work well for you and others don’t. In fact that’s how Don is making his money. His method is not new technique at all but many old ones rolled up into his training system. In dog training, it isn’t so much the method used but consistency, practice, and praising the dog appropriately. I’m always amazed on how well dogs learn in spite of their owners.
