dog training for dummies
how to get my lab to retrieve birds.?

i have a female lab she is one year old. i have been training her to be a duck hunting dog. she knows her obedience very well and loves to retrieve balls and dummies. but when i plant frozen doves and ducks for her to find and retrieve she chews them up and shakes them around. how can i get her to be more gentle with the birds and bring them back? please help its quite frustrating….

Please send me a private email for more information:
1. Don’t use frozen birds. They need to be thawed out (later in the training)
2. You will likely need to do a force fetch first
3. Start with a retrieving retrieving buck, bumpers, or Dolkin ducks DON”T start with birds. You then can move to a retrieving bumper that has some wings tied to it.
It is very common for novice dogs to chew birds. There is a number of ways to break this but is best NOT allowing her to start the habit by getting her used to retrieving to hand first then add real birds.

madrat: retrievers hunt DEAD birds dear. The ducks are shot prior to them being retrieved..hence the ducks are already dead
