How can I get my dog to come in when I call her?

How can I train my dog to come in when I call her after she’s been to the bathroom outside?

Coming when called is absolutely one of the hardest things for a dog to learn.

Actually, I think they “learn” it really well. She probably knows exactly what you want her to do. She just has other priorities, other things that are a whole lot more interesting to her!

So it’s not a matter of “learning” it’s a matter of her “deciding” that coming to you is what she wants to do. With my dog, I keep a bunch of the tastiest treats I know of by the back door. She only gets one when she comes when I call her, particularly after having been out in the yard. She’s learned to associate coming with big noms and a really happy human who makes a fuss over her. She also has never, ever been given reason to think that something unpleasant (like yelling) will happen when she comes.

If she doesn’t come right away, close the door. Don’t let her realize that she can just ignore you and you’ll keep standing there like an idiot! Wait about 2 minutes, go back to the door, call her again, reward her big time if she comes.

Another thing you can try is putting her on a long leash when she goes out to the yard. Call her, if she doesn’t respond, give a little yank on the leash, get her in the house, give her big rewards.

I find that with dogs this can be a lifetime issue. I mean, you have to keep practicing with it, you have to keep the treats available. There are so many interesting things in a dog’s outdoors world, and they are really distractable.
