Can anyone recommend a dog trainer in NJ/NYC area? Also, which method to use remote or clicker training?
With clicker training it is said to be hit or miss — also the dog doesn’t really LEARN the behavior… just does it for performance and the treat…. this true?
Sorry, I can’t help with trainers, tho contacting the local obedience club will certainly get you some excellent suggestions for trainers to persue. I found mine via the Agility club suggestions. The nice thing about going this way is that you are getting suggestions of trainers they have used, know and trust to be good at what they do.
I go to obedience competition training classes with my Border Collie puppy and we are using the clicker method. I have found it to be very useful. It is a reward/treat based method, but a good trainer who teaches this will also help you learn how to phase out the treats. I taught my BC to “touch a target” in just an hour. I find it to be a fast way to get the message across to my puppy what it is she does that I want her to do. Do a google search on it and you can read up in more detail what it entails. I personally wouldn’t train without this useful tool.
