My dog bit my neighbor’s son?
This is the first time hes ever bitten anyone and i want to keep him but i know i have to do something so that my neighbors can live comfortably.
So should i consider sending him to an applied animal behaviorist or to a obedience trainer? What is the difference? Can someone send me a link to a list of certified animal behaviorists in my area (NJ)?
The kid did not directly provoke my dog by any teasing and this child has played with my dog on several different occasions. he is a Newfoundland/retriever. good temperment. 6 yrs old. has been “home schooled” by me, but obviously not well enough. kid had minor injuries.
At least you’ve gone to the trouble to find out why your dog has suddenly turned, well done! I’d ask a behavourist to visit you so that he/she can see you and your dog, and your neighbours if they’d like to take part, at home, how everyone reacts to the dog, what made him snap etc etc. If your neighbours have turned against you because of this incident then write them a letter saying how very sorry you are, that its totally out of character for your dog and that you are addressing the issue immediately. Ask them not to report your dog as you adore him and he’s company for you and ask for their understanding whilst he’s going through what will turn out to be very strict training. Of course, offer your utmost sympathies to their son, don’t make it all me,me,me and ask if theres anything you can do to lessen their son’s fear of your dog and that, after training, you’d like their son to come over and see the dog as he is now. I really hope it works out for you, i can tell you’re doing all you can to lessen the fall-out from this and i really hope your neighbours understand where you’re coming from. Take care.
