How can I make my dog respond quickly to commands?
He already knows the basic obedience, but it seems he doesn’t have the right presence of mind to be focusing on me. How can I work my dog with intensity?
Work quick, fast, and happy. Work when your dog is hungry!!!
I recommend doggy push-ups. Put your dog in a sit. Put him into a down. Pull him back into a sit. Put him back into a down. Do this very quickly and reward fast. Be happy and be upbeat. If he’s lagging, you’re not doing it quickly enough. When he lags, take a toy and play with him. When he’s excited and rearing to go, repeat the doggy push-ups.
Another exercise is rapid sits. With your dog on a lead, run quickly backwards. Suddenly stop and put your dog in a sit. Do it again. Run zig zags, run side to side, run backwards, and then run forward. Always suddenly stop and then put your dog into a sit.
The key is to be exciting. And if you’re not being exciting enough, play with your dog and then repeat the exercises.
