Canine Dog Training

canine dog training
About training my dog???????????????

I need to be able to do this:

Two handlers and their dogs approach each other from a distance, stop, shake hands, and exchange pleasantries, and continue. The dogs should show no more than casual interest in each other. They should not try to greet, attack, or run from the other dog.

My dog Isn’t aggressive at all. But he LOVES other dogs and runs up to them to play. Once he even dragged me through a backyard!
Please I need help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He needs to pass a test to be certified as a good canine citizen.
What is a training technique to have him stay by my side and not even greet the other dog?
Please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanx to you all!

If you are doing your “bronze” certificate your dog will need to be able to do other things, presumably he will walk without pulling you when he is in a training mode at a class.

I know that you cannot use treats during the test, however you can use treats while training him at home. Get some special treats, not those awful things that are sold at pet shops. Buy some cheese, cut it into small pieces, bag it and freeze it. Go to Aldi or Iceland and buy bags of cooked chicken, they are finger sized pieces and the bags are the same size as a small bag of frozen chips. Defrost enough for a training session in your garden and cut them up into small pieces. Dogs also love hot dogs which are available in jars. All of the above will cost you about £6 in total, they are healthier and more appetizing than bought treats. Dogs respond to treats and your supplies will last for several weeks.

To get your dog to ignore the other dog, do some heel work and teach it to sit every time you stop. Always keep your treats in a pocket on your left and give him the treat with your left hand. Walk him with your hand in the correct position and have a treat concealed in your hand. Stop on your right foot and bring your left foot forward so that your feet are together, say sit as you are doing this and when your dog sits give it a treat. Practice walking and stopping without your dog until you get your timing right..

When you have got the footwork right do some heel work and train your dog to sit when you stop. Then get someone without a dog to approach you, tell your dog to sit and shake their hand. Your dog may sit without a command if you have got the footwork right. Later practice doing this with someone who has a calm dog.

Always go over the top with praise and encouragement. Never rebuke your dog when he makes a mistake, the lack of praise is a rebuke in itself. Remember that you can take your “Bronze” several times. Be laid back when you do this and don’t get stage fright.

Good Luck.
