What is the best way to potty train a yorki puppy?
My parents have a 3 month old female Yorkie puppy. They are currently trying to train it indoors using wee wee pads. They keep the dog confined to a small area in the kitchen. I feel there strategy needs to be changed entirely. They favored the indoor method so that they can be gone from home longer. Im leaning in the direction of outside training. There are so many articles online and so many books available, which I find highly confusing. What is the best method and can you please list step by step directions.
Below is the method we use over here, and I have yet to hear of a case where it did not work:
First of all: No wee wee pads. The dog learns to go outside from the beginning. Pads work for some dogs, but for many it merely teaches them that it is okay to go inside the house, also it tends to prolong the housebreaking, because the dog first has to learn to go on the pads and then afterwards has to learn not to use pads, but to go outside.
- take her out after she’s slept, eaten and played.
- watch her like a hawk and take her out when she looks as if she’s about to go.
- if you catch her in the act: lift her up and flip her on her back (most puppies will instinctively stop peeing, so that they don’t wet themselves) and take her outside.
- keep track of how many times she goes per day and how much time passes between each time. That way you know when to take her out.
- always go outside with her and never too far away from your home (puppies like to poop and pee where they feel safe).
- praise her quietly as she does it (and you can add a cue, so that later, she’ll go on cue) and once she’s done, praise her silly.
- never scold or punish her for going inside. Simply clear up the mess with a cleaner that removes organic smell.
If they’re not able to be home with the puppy 24 hours a day, then confine her in an area that’s easy to clean, but try to be with the puppy as much as possible. The more successful outdoor pees she has, compared to indoor accident, the faster, she’ll learn.
